When the psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud put forth his ideas about the id, the ego, and the superego in the early 1900s, his theories were met with controversy and skepticism. In spite of this, his theory about the human psyche is a prominent theme in Golding's The Lord of the Flies. The novel presents the idea that savagery is a more natural part of human beings rather than the orderly principles enforced by society. By putting the characters on an island far away from the influences of civilization, Golding illustrates how the id is an innate part of all humans and will eventually take over once the obligation to maintain the superego is taken away.
